Accomac Perdue Farms workers get first doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine
ACCOMAC, Va. – Workers at Perdue Farms in Accomac got their first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Those vaccinations mark the beginning of Perdue’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution across the country. Perdue says the Virginia Department of Health helped to make this possible.
Perdue says they worked to develop their vaccination plan for workers as soon as they knew the vaccines would be available in coming weeks. Workers who were vaccinated say getting the shot is a matter of life or death. “At least I have a chance at still living. I want to live and if this will help, I decided to take it. I was a little bit skeptical of it, but it’s going to be what it’s going to be,” said Annette Hinmon.
Since the vaccines became available, Perdue has been advocating for poultry and meat industry workers to be prioritized. In December of 2020, the CDC recommended that states include those workers in phase 1b of their vaccination plans.
