IR boys soccer advances to first DIAA state title game since ’16

DAGSBORO, Del.- Scoring the games only goal 43 seconds in, the Indian River Indians held on to defeat Sussex Academy 1-0 to advance to the DIAA DII state championship game. The Seahawks finish their season with a 8-3-1 record, the 4th seed in the DIAA playoffs and a playoff victory over Caravel.

It looked to be a high scoring game from the start, IR’s Jordan Illian getting River on the board just 43 seconds into the game. The next 79:17 did not turn out that way. Each team was able to get a few shots on goal but neither able to get them in the net. A stellar performance from both keepers, SAS’s Cole White (11 saves vs 17 shots) and IR’s Bastian Perry (5 saves on 6 shots), standing strong in goal the entire game.

IR will play in the DII state championship game this Saturday and will take on the winner of tonights MOT Charter vs Newark Charter matchup.
