High number of COVID cases at ECI

SOMERSET Co., Md. – Eastern Correctional Institution currently has the highest total number of COVID-19 cases out of all the prisons in the State of Maryland.

The latest figures show that a total of 110 staff members and 287 inmates at the facility have tested positive.
77 staff members and 49 inmates have recovered.

We spoke to the Somerset County Health Department, they said any inmate who tests positive at the facility contributes to Somerset County’s positivity rate. Somerset currently has the highest positivity rate in the State of Maryland.

When asked about the high number of cases, Lt. Latoya Gray, the Media Relations Coordinator for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said, “ECI is the largest prison in the state and we are committed to slowing the spread of COVID and treating each inmate and employee with respect during this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, Director of Communications for the State of Maryland Mike Ricci said, “ECI is experiencing a rise in cases similar to what we’re seeing in the community at large, but it has relatively few cases requiring hospitalizations. All necessary mitigation measures are in place at this time.”

According to JAMA, the American Medical Association’s peer-reviewed journal, the risk of getting COVID-19 in prison is 5.5 times higher than the general population.
