Del. Office of Highway Safety running Safe Family Holiday campaign
DELAWARE – Delaware Office of Highway Safety is reminding folks to stay safe on the roads this holiday season. They’re marking the holiday season with their annual Safe Family Holiday campaign with an emphasis on driving safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “It kind of combines all of our priority areas. So that would include impaired driving, it would include distracted driving, occupant protection which is wearing your seatbelt, pedestrian safety,” said DOHS Traffic Safety Program Manager Sarah Cattie.
The DOHS says COVID-19 is contributing to danger on the roads – because many folks might assume there’s not as much traffic. Cattie says it’s important to remember that even amid a pandemic, it’s important to buckle up, put your cell phone down, and drive sober. “You’re getting into this situation where people might think there aren’t as many people on the road. You could see some drop off, but I think we’re still going to see quite a number of people getting out, just because they want to leave their house and they want to go do something,” said Cattie.
Cattie also says that people should keep in mind that traffic tickets or accidents could make insurance and car maintenance bills go up while many are struggling with finances right now. The DOHS will be teaming up with local restaurants to spread their message and making appearances at holiday events through Delaware.
