Berlin kicks off holiday season with “Ice Ice Berlin” event
BERLIN, Md. – Friday Berlin kicked off the holiday season with a new event. “Ice Ice Berlin” was organized in place of the annual tree lighting ceremony to raise folks’ holiday spirit and allow them to social distance easier. “What we’ve done is we have a ice sculptor who usually comes and he spends all night carving one giant ice sculpture. So tonight because of COVID and social distancing, he’s carved 24 ice sculptures,” said Director of Economic and Community Development Ivy Wells.
Wells says not only will this bring cheer to local people. It’ll also help the local economy to get a kick start for the holiday season. “A lot of our shops also placed tables and chairs outside. That helps with social distancing. Our local businesses really do need that extra push, and something like this it’s good for the entire community. It’s good for the businesses. Plus it’s good for all the families who are in town,” said Wells.
Wells also tells us that she hopes this event will stick around in the coming years. She says she thinks kids will enjoy the wide variety of ice sculptures and make the tree lighting ceremony much more fun and exciting. The kids get to enjoy 24 ice sculptures instead of just one. Most of the time they have to wait to the end to see what it is. So I got my fingers crossed on this one,” said Wells.
