SBY city leaders proclaim Indigenous Peoples Day

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury city officials proclaimed October 12th as Indigenous People’s Day for the city. Acting Mayor Julia Glanz says that they wanted to recognize and honor those who had their land and homes stolen from them. She also says that the city wanted to help highlight the extensive history of indigenous and native people in the area.

Acting Mayor Glanz officially proclaimed the day during Monday’s Salisbury City Council meeting. She tells 47ABC that not only is Indigenous Peoples Day an alternative to the troubled past of Christopher Columbus, but an opportunity to celebrate native and indigenous culture. “I think it’s time that we shed light on those that need to have that light shined on them and not continue to give air to those that don’t deserve it,” said Acting Mayor Glanz.

Delmarva is home to the Choptank, the Nanticoke, the Annamessex, and the Manokin. City officials say the Salisbury Human Rights Advisory Committee recommended the designation. Meanwhile, the Edwatrd H Nabb Research Center at Salisbury University is helping celebrate by showcasing photo and document archives online.
