Raising awareness about addiction through poetry

SALISBURY, Md. – In honor of Wicomico Goes Purple, Salisbury’s Poet Laureate is doing what she can to help raise awareness about the disease of addiction.

A little over a year ago, when she became the Poet Laureate, Nancy Mitchell started something called Poets on the Plaza. This is where regular people read their poetry on the downtown plaza in Salisbury.

Since the pandemic started, Nancy has moved these poetry readings online and now, during the month of September, she’s putting a focus on recovery.

Mitchell is inviting both local and international poets to share their work as it relates to addiction and recovery on Zoom. At the end of these Zoom meetings, people are given the chance to ask the poets questions about their work. Mitchell says her overall goal with this is to spread awareness as well as empathy.

Mitchell said, “My goal is to move hearts, to open hearts, and to raise awareness. To have people have empathetic experiences and to help others move out of the shadow of shame.”

Mitchell is hosting these Zoom calls every Thursday at 7 p.m. throughout the month of September.
