Delaware Law Enforcement Accountability Task Force meets virtually

DELAWARE – The Delaware Law Enforcement Accountability Task Force met virtually today to continue their work to promote police transparency. During the meeting the transparency and accountability subcommittee discussed three main topics they’re trying to tackle.

They discussed amending the law enforcement officer bill of rights, creating civilian review boards, and establishing a disciplinary database. One of the big obstacles they discussed are the current restrictions on public information about police discipline because of limitations placed on it by the Freedom of Information Act. “It can be that out of the work that we do, we might have to recommend legislative change to FOIA to allow databases to allow other changes. But I personally am not interested in starting the process where we’re already putting up barriers,” said Chair of the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice Charlotte King.

next meeting will be on September 14th at 6 p.m. The Community Policing and Engagement Sub committee will meet virtually.  For more information about the task force including how you can watch the meetings, you can email the task force at leotaskforce@delaware.gov.
