Wicomico County Health Dept. offering free virtual health classes, activities for women
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Women in Wicomico County can look forward to a new free, virtual program from the health department that is designed to help them live healthier lifestyles. The Sustainable Change and Lifestyle Enhancement program is open to all women ages 18 through 55 – and offers interactive classes and activities. “We’re going to actually tweak it for COVID and virtual and exercising together virtually will be part of the classes this time. As far as the activities and things of that nature, we love to be creative and bring people fun ways to learn about things,” said Director of Prevention and Health Communications Cara Rozaieski.
Rozaieski says that they adapted the program from a similar one in West Virginia to meet the needs of local women. “We kind of took a little bit of what they were doing in their classes and we adapted it for our population here in Wicomico and Somerset Counties,” said Rozaieski.
The Wicomico County Health Department says that they wanted to make the program as accessible as possible – because many moms are busy getting their kids situated in school during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I don’t think it’s news to anyone that being overweight and obesity are problems of our culture. The way we eat and sit can create so many problems for health, not only now but also in the future,” said Rozaieski.
Rozaieski says the program was actually initally designed to include entire families. But they streamlined it because of COVID-19. She says women with grown children or no children are welcome to join in. “It will definitely be a learning curve for all of us. We’re open to input from our participants as we go,” said Rozaieski.
Rozaieski tells 47ABC she hopes the women who participate will pass what they’ve learned along to their families.
