Salisbury University recognized by the United Nations
SALISBURY, Md. – Thirteen students were named UN Millennium fellows. That secured the university a spot among only 80 institutions in the world named as UN Millennium Campuses.
Each student proposed a project focusing on one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. “The students have the opportunity when they’re working on these projects to create whatever project of their choosing. However, they have to have some kind of expertise in it – and it kind of has to be a project that really can work to the best capability,” said Dr. Brittany Foutz with Salisbury University’s Bosserman Center for Conflict Resolution.
Dr. Foutz tells 47ABC that the fellowships help the students make connections within their own communities – and the world around them. “These projects are definitely helping the students become great ambassadors for the college, even the community, and even for the world because they’re also exchanging resources with other campuses,” said Dr. Foutz.
The UN has 17 different sustainability goals. Dr. Foutz says that students of all programs of study can get involved. For example – one student focused on researching and creating more awareness about resources for people dealing with COVID-19 in Wicomico County.
Dr. Foutz says the recognition from the UN opens up opportunities for the students that they might not normally come by. “They’ll be introduced to maybe diplomatic representatives from the United Nations who will help them and learn the process of what maybe it looks like to create a resume for the United Nations,” said Dr. Foutz.
