Miss GEICO powerboat revving up for Ocean City Air Show

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Most people get to watch from the sand in Ocean City as Miss GEICO races along the shore during the Ocean City Air Show. But Friday 47ABC got to get a different view – riding along with the speed boat’s chase team as Miss GEICO prepared to race a Skytyper plane over the weekend. “The planes are very talented. They can fly very low. So it seems like they’re gonna touch the deck of the boat – and to have those two things moving close together is pretty exciting,” said Throttle Man Steve Curtis.

Wheel man for Miss GEICO Travis Pastrana is a Maryland native. He says he’s excited to take part in the exhibition race with the Skytypers for the first time. “It’s so huge for me. I’ve been having a lot of great time with my family at home. But I love racing, and to be able to come back and get my first drive in this amazing boat out here in my home state is just absolutely awesome,” said Pastrana.

This is the first time Miss GEICO has revved her engines to the max after a serious crash back in July of 2019. Friday – The boat did have some technical issues after what was likely seaweed got sucked into the engine. But after flushing the traps, Miss GEICO was back out on the water, making waves and shredding the surf.

Pastrana says it’s a dream come true. “I’ve always wanted to come to the air show. We’ve always had an event the same weekends. It’s actually my first time out here. I’m kind of embarrassed to say that, living right down the road. But it’s so awesome for me to come out,” said Pastrana.

Curtis says he’s pumped to get out on the water again over the weekend and show Ocean City what powerboat racing is all about. “Since this COVID thing happened, it’s just great to be back with the team and it’s great showing a bigger audience what offshore power boats are,” said Curtis.
