Talbot County weighs in on Talbot Boys Statue’s fate

EASTON, Md. – The discussion continues on whether to remove the controversial Talbot Boys Statue that honors confederate soldiers. “It’s been here just over 100 years. It has been a debate in the past to the previous council,” said Talbot County Council President Corey Pack.

During a county council meeting Tuesday night, the council heard from a number of residents on both sides of the matter.  Some of them called for the council to vote on the resolution Tuesday – but the council decided to keep the vote set for August 11th. “Times have changed. People have changed. I have changed in my thinking regarding the statue and if it’s appropriate for the statue to remain on the courthouse lawn. Therefore, this resolution would remove the statue and base,” said Pack.

Pack says that his feelings on removing the statue have changed after hearing from residents. “My thinking has changed. My heart has changed towards where I was back in 2015 when I was part of the council that made the decision to retain the statue. I believe that my consideration was wrong back then,” said Pack.

Pack says that he hopes at least two other council members will vote to remove the statue in order to get a majority vote. Written comments from the public are being accepted until August 7th.
