Indian River School District employee of 28 years running for board seat

SELBYVILLE, Del. – Connie Pryor is running for the fourth district seat on the Indian River School District’s board. “I just want the best for our staff and students of the Indian River School District. I’ve worked for the district for many years, and I think there’s some things with the school board that could be changed,” said Pryor.

Pryor worked in the Indian River School district for 28 years as a secretary at Selbyville Middle School and Phillip Showell Elementary School. “I’ve been a union rep, and I’ve dealt with several of the administration. I’ve seen how things are done – how the board works. I gained interest in it, and I just think that maybe I could make a difference,” said Pryor.

The candidate tells 47ABC that if she’s elected to the board – she wants to help make the board more accessible and approachable to the public. “That’s what they’re there for. It’s for people to go to. If they need help – or whatever – then I think they should be able to go. I’ve been to several board meetings, and I realize you can’t have people there all night complaining and carrying on, but I do feel that they are very, very formal,” said Pryor.

Pryor says that her long history of working in the district gives her the experience necessary to help make that possible. “I’ve dealt with parents, teachers, visitors. I’ve dealt with them all – and there’s just a lot of people that deal with the school district. Everyone – and I just think that the school board should be approachable,” said Pryor.

Pryor says she wants to help make the school board meetings more open to discussion from the public. “I think they should be a little more – as you call it – user friendly. I think that people should be able to get up, speak more than those three minutes. They don’t have to talk all night, but they can say what they have to say and have some discussion,” said Pryor.

The candidate says she aims to help the board re-evaluate how the district spends its budget – and look at a possible re-assessment of the district and its community.

The board elections will take place on July 21st. Polls will be open at Lord Baltimore Elementary School and Indian River High School from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
