Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County hosting virtual 5K

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County is hosting a brand new fundraiser to make sure they can keep building homes for people in need. “In the past everyone was able to have their special events – big galas, big fundraisers. Now because of COVID-19 we just can’t get out and be with other people as much as we want to. So virtual fundraising is – a lot of non profits across the country are turning to it to make sure that we can still get the funding that we need,” said Development Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County Christina Williams.

Williams says  you can do pretty much anything from walking to running on a treadmill to skateboarding. “Without funds we can’t build our homes for people in need. So it’s really important that we get out there and try something different and get our donors and our supporters engaged in different ways,” said Williams.

The Summer Stretch 5K is happening between August 7th and August 30th. Williams says that Habitat for Humanity had to think out side the box to keep the community engaged – and the program running. “All of our regular in person events that we do like Chefs for Habitat and things like that – they just can’t happen the way that we used to. So we had to start thinking and changing our mindset a little bit about how we engage with the community and how they engage with us,” said Williams.

Williams says all proceeds will go towards buying supplies for builds – and funding their home repair program. If you’d like to register for the virtual 5K – you can find a link to registration here. Registration ends on August 30th.
