White Marlin Open adds new category to annual tournament

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Organizers of the White Marlin Open released some details about this year’s tournament including a new prize category.

The 47th tournament features a new category called Level Pay Day. That category will award anglers each day of the tournament who hold first, second or third place for the biggest marlins or tuna. They’re predicting to give out more than six and a half million dollars in prize money. Organizers say due to restrictions there may be changes to how spectators watch the weigh ins. As of Wednesday, 82 boats have already signed up which is right on par with where the numbers were last year.

“I’m surprised that we are where we are as far as the number of boats. We still have two months, over two months yet, before the tournament. But it’s looking like people have been pent up and locked up literally and they’re hungry to go fishing,” says Jim Motsko, the founder of the White Marlin Open.

Motsko also says this will help the local economy which has been suffering because of restrictions. The 2020 White Marlin Open is scheduled for August 3rd through August 7th. Last year, about 400 boats participated. Motsko says organizers are still waiting to hear if Michael Jordan’s boat will be back this year.
