Salisbury University ES-FAMI program gets $2.49 million grant

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University’s Eastern Shore Faculty Academy and Mentorship Initiative was just approved for a $2.49 million grant. The grant is going towards training nursing school instructors and converting their existing in person training program to a virtual one.

Program director Brad Hauck tells 47ABC that two new training curriculum for new instructors. “The introductory academy focuses on really foundational skills that our nurses will need to teach the students,” said Hauck. “In the advanced academy we build on those introductory skills, and we kind of deep dive into those introductory skills, and we also provide them with new topics of learning that they may not have thought of.”

Hauck tells us that instructors will be better trained on learning theories and planning assignments. He also says that now is an important time to make sure that nursing students are getting the best education possible. “They’re asking people to come out of retirement. So it’s more important I think now more than ever for the people who are teaching these students to be really prepared. So that way their students can have the best chance for when they hit the floor they’re ready to go,” said Hauck.

Hauck also tells 47ABC that Salisbury University is working to diversify their nursing school faculty.  “One of our goals is to increase the diversity of our faculty. It’s really important for our faculty to look like our nursing population and we have a very diverse student nursing population, so it’s important for us to have a diverse faculty population,” said Hauck.

The university is also working in partnership with other institutions and hospitals across Maryland to spread the program. Hauck says that he hopes the network will help stop the state’s shortage in nursing staff.
