Local campaign helps thank essential workers

SALISBURY, Md. – Two Maryland residents are thanking essential workers with an initiative called “Essential Love 2020” by giving t-shirts to people who are nominated.

On Thursday Za’Keel Thomas was surprised with shirt by Jermichael Mitchell, one of the initiative’s organizers. Thomas is a nurse at Delmar Nursing Home and was nominated by his mom. Thomas tells 47 ABC that work has been challenging during the pandemic especially when it comes to keeping up with the regulations and precautions but he’s proud to serve the community.

“To do this you have to be caring, you have to put yourself at risk. It’s crazy how it is today but it’s good that we have people like me and my mother and other essential workers that are willing to go out there and do the work that needs to be done,” says Za’Keel Thomas.

Organizers are looking for more people to nominate essential workers they know. To make it a more meaningful project, they’d like to learn a little bit about each person who is nominated. The essential worker can be someone who works at a grocery store, a mail carrier, you name it.

Here’s how to participate:

  • Email a short video or write up to EssentialLove2020@gmail.com
  • Include the name of an essential worker, their job and why they deserve to be recognized
