Two Maryland men thanking essential workers, accepting nominations

47 ABC – Two Maryland residents are thanking essential workers on the Delmarva Peninsula but they need your help to find deserving members in each community before Friday.

The initiative called “Essential Love 2020” was started by Shelton Hawkins of Easton and Jermichael Mitchell of Salisbury. The two were able to fundraise enough money to buy hundreds of  t-shirts that will be given out to essential workers. The front features a heart on the side of the chest that says “Essential 2020”. The back says “Thank you 4 everything you are doing – the world.”

“Our main thing was we didn’t want to sell the shirts. I didn’t want to capitalize off of selling stuff. I wanted it to be free. I wanted those people to feel appreciated and say this is our gift from the community to you. This is a cool way of us saying thank you,” says Shelton Hawkins, one of the organizers for Essential Love 2020.

They plan to give the first round of shirts away on Friday. To make it a more meaningful project, they’d like to learn a little bit about each person who is nominated. The essential worker can be someone who works at a grocery store, a mail carrier, you name it.

Here’s how to participate:

  • Email a short video or write up to
  • Include the name of an essential worker, their job and why they deserve to be recognized
