Local institutions teaming up to help protect medical workers

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University and non-profit technology organization M4 Reactor teamed up with Peninsula Regional Medical Center to help protect doctors. They worked together to build protective barriers to place over patients while they’re being intubated.

The clear, plastic cubes were designed by a doctor at PRMC, and perfected by sculpture professors and volunteers at M4 Reactor. Student workers helped to assemble the cubes before they were sent to PRMC.  Salisbury University assistant professor of sculpture Bill Wolff says they’re working on other projects to help create more protection for medical workers. “We have ordered materials and we have a plan of work. We should have a prototype of a respirator that is made out of plastic that can be put through an autoclave or a dishwasher to be sterilized,” said Wolff.

Another thing that they’re working on is making resin face shields. Wolff tells 47ABC that Salisbury University has a workshop with full capability to produce the supplies. He also says he and his students are going to keep offering their skills to help medical professionals in any way they can.
