Indian River School District providing remote learning for students

SELBYVILLE, Del. – Indian River School District is going to launch a remote learning plan for students next week. District officials tell 47 ABC students will be able to keep up with activities and work provided by teachers both online and through hard copies left outside the schools. “Because of equitable access, we have to make sure that we are providing it both virtually and in hard copy. So, first and foremost, all learning activities that are teachers are designing are going to be provided in hard copy,” said Renee Jerns, director of secondary education.”

The district is also providing online counseling from school guidance counselors. Jerns says the district is focused on making sure students are able to have access to resources they might not be able to use at home.

The school district says many teachers were already using online learning before schools were closed down. Now, they’re working together to make sure that each student has consistent learning experiences. “It’s crucial that we still consider the whole child. It’s not just about academics. It’s about all of it. So, I will say that we have one awesome team who has really stepped up to the plate to make sure they’re providing activities of all types,” said Jerns.

The activities are not going to be graded, but the district says students will continue to receive feedback from their teachers. Jerns says the goal is to make sure students are prepared for the next school year. The school district is creating these learning opportunities with guidance from the Delaware Department of Education. Indian River schools will continue to change and add to the remote learning plan as more developments related to COVID-19 come about.

Jerns urges parents who might not have access to online or hard copy materials for their children to contact their school’s administrator so that they can develop a plan to help.
