Local non-profit to offer free tax prep ahead of tax return season

SALISBURY, Md. – Here’s some news you can use. In four days the IRS will start accepting tax returns, and as stressful as tax return season can be, one local non-profit is offering free tax prep to help make it a little easier. From now until April 11th, Shore UP! will be offering their free tax preparation through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. In order to be eligible for this service, you have to make less than 56 thousand dollars annually. Program organizers say offers like this are critical to help those save money while doing their taxes and get the guidance they need.

“Shore UP’s motto is helping people and changing lives. And we feel like providing these tools like free tax preparation will help people, help individuals to save money because the money they would’ve used towards tax preparation can go towards other expenses and other essentials,” said Chief Development and Communications Officer for Shore UP! Tameka Norman.

SHORE UP! Inc.’s FREE Tax Preparation Program will take place by appointment only on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at SHORE UP! Inc. The agency is located at 500 Snow Hill Rd. in Salisbury, Md. Tax preparation will extend through Saturday, April 11 at this location. The second location will be in the Student Development Center’s Upward Bound Room (2240) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Preparation at UMES will be held Fridays only, Feb. 7 through March 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Volunteers are currently being accepted for the Free Tax Preparation Program. Volunteers will be trained and must pass a certification test.
