Late surge by Middletown knocks Smyrna out of the playoffs
MIDDLETOWN, Del- After tying the game up at 20 early in the second half, the Smyrna Eagles fell to Middletown 48-28 in the DIAA State Semifinal. The Eagles finish the season with a 9-3 record, the number 3 seed in the bracket.
It was a slow start for both teams, Middletown finally getting on the board with three minutes to play. A handoff up the gut to Najair Smith and he walked in for the score to take the 7 point lead. With just over a minute to play in the quarter, the Eagles would get going. A long pass to Devin DeMoe got Smyrna inside the fifteen yard line and Wayne Knight would finish it off from there. Out of the Earthquake formation, Knight kept the snap and powered his way in for the score. The two point conversion was no good, Cavaliers still lead 7-6 to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Cavs kept up their momentum. A Braden Davis pass to Jaheim Wing over the middle goes for six as Middletown made it an eight point lead. After a Smyrna three and out, the Cavaliers would get on the board once more. This time it was Davis to Wing once more for the score, extra point no good so Smyrna got the ball down fourteen midway through the second quarter. It turned into the Wayne Knight show from there, he carried the team down to the quarter inch line and Marcus Cajuste would take it from there. Going to the Earthquake again, he punched it in for the score to cut the Cavalier lead to just six at the halftime break.
After receiving the opening kickoff, the Eagles continued their dominance on the ground. Knight would get his second touchdown of the game, this time a handoff for twenty yards to tie the game up at 20. At the start of the fourth quarter, game still tied, the Cavs got the ball and began to drive. Getting the ball inside the Smyrna ten yard line, they faced two fourth and goal situations, both times they were bailed out by Smyrna PI calls. On first and goal from the one yard line, Wing would punch it in for his third score of the game to take the six point lead, 26-20.
From there, the Smyrna offense began to slow down. A three and out would lead to another Smith touchdown off the right sideline. On the ensuing kickoff, Devin Smith cut it back to a six point game returning the kickoff 70 yards to the house. On the first play of the next Middletown drive, the Cavs flexed their muscles again. A screen to Isaiah Griffin down the right sideline goes for six to make it a fourteen point game once again. From there, the Eagles fell apart. A low snap got picked up by the Middletown defense and returned for six as Middletown knocks Smyrna out of the playoffs with the 48-28 win.
