Clippers smother Seahawks, capture 3A South regional title

BERLIN, Md- The James M. Bennett boys soccer team captured the 3A South region II championship on Tuesday night, defeating Stephen Decatur 2-0 at Lou Taylor Stadium in Berlin.

Drew von Kollmar finished with both goals for the Clippers, with both scores coming in the second half. After a scoreless first, both teams would ratchet up the pressure in the second. Bennett’s Colin Hofman would be taken down in the box just five minutes into the second half. von Kollmar would step up and bury the PK to give his team a 1-0 lead.

After 30 more scoreless minutes featuring a plethora of saves by Bennett’s Will Simpson and Decatur’s Aeddan Jones. With less than five minutes remaining in the game, von Kollmar struck again. After a Decatur player was yellow carded, Bennett was awarded a direct kick. von Kollmar set up quickly and blasted a shot past the Seahawks’ somewhat-scattered wall, and their keeper.

The win gives JMB the south region II championship. Bennett will await their next opponent, to be determined after all eight teams are re-seeded.
