Police investigating fatal Frankford bike accident

FRANKFORD, Del. – Delaware State Police say a 62-year-old man died after being hit by a car while riding a bike, Friday night.

According to officials, Tony Townsend was biking around 8:55 p.m. northbound on DuPont Boulevard (U.S. 113) in the left lane just south of Hickory Street. Police say a driver in a Ford Escape, also traveling northbound, did not see the cyclist and hit the back of the bike. The Seaford man, who was thrown off the bike, was brought to Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Seaford man was reportedly wearing dark clothing and his bicycle did not have any type of lights.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a 24-year-old male from Seaford, was wearing a seat belt and not injured.

Northbound DuPont Boulevard was closed for about 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
