Wicomico Co. joins national opioid lawsuit
WICOMICO CO., Md. – Wicomico County Council agreed on Tuesday to officially join 24 other Maryland counties in a national opioid lawsuit.
Councilmembers agreed to have a special team of lawyers represent the county in a class action lawsuit against major pharmaceutical companies.
The lawsuit claims that the companies are to blame for the opioid epidemic across the nation and locally. It’s an epidemic that has taken a toll on the community both emotionally and financially due to hospital, EMS and law enforcement costs.
“There’s a definite need and we’re still impacted every month we get the overdose reports and we see this lawsuit as a potential to help us deal with those ramifications,” explains Weston Young, of the Wicomico County Executive’s Office.
Young says the county will pursue every opportunity possible to receive any money from this lawsuit as well as any other sort of funding to help the county deal with the epidemic.
