Georgetown man sentenced in 2016 assault case

DELAWARE – A Georgetown man has been sentenced to 67 years behind bars for assaulting and raping a woman and killing a man back in 2016.

According to officials, 25-year-old Juan Tovar Cruz was renting a room in a house on Wilson Hill Road in Georgetown back in October 2016. Just a week after he started living there, he came home and threatened the woman who lived there, tying her up with an electrical cord and raping her multiple times with her two year old daughter present in the home.

The victim was able to escape to a neighbors house, where she called police. When Delaware State Police troopers arrived, they also found a man who had been beaten to death with a hammer.

Earlier this year, Cruz pleaded guilty to second degree murder, first and second degree rape, endangering the welfare of a child, and second degree assault.

Following his 67 year sentence, he will face one year of home confinement and two years of probation.
