Late night fire leaves one dead, family displaced

SEAFORD, Del. – In a matter of minutes, a Seaford home went up in flames. A sight that could be seen miles away.

“When you see something like that your heart just sinks,” said Pastor of the Church of God, Dan Southern.

“My son was out waking the kids and he saw the flames come out the window, he heard the windows exploding,” said resident Penny Holt.

According to the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office the Wednesday night blaze claimed one life. A beloved cousin to the six family members that lived inside the home.

“I’m working last night, somebody called me, and my house got smoked. Everything’s lost,” said the renter of the home James Alfrede.

Residents we spoke to say people tried to save the person inside, butt there was some miscommunication, and they were too late.

“There’s a gentleman on the corner who actually kicked the front door in to try get in, but then we were told to back off because there wasn’t anybody in there,” Holt said.

Investigators say the body has since been turned over to forensic officials to help determine the cause of death. Luckily, the six other family members who also lived inside the home were not hurt during the fire. And now the Seaford community, is working together to help get them back on their feet.

“You know that this is going to be a total loss, and this family has lost everything in this fire,” said Southern.

Southern says his church is now teaming up with the non profit Love Inc. to raise donations for the family, and he’s challenging others to do the same.

“We issue a challenge to other individuals in the community, other churches, other businesses, just kind hearted people, if they want to make a contribution to help this family get back on their feet,” he said.

And despite the long road to recovery ahead– all this family has to do is look to their neighbors for help.

“When there’s a family in need, it brings out that compassion inside every individuals,” said Southern.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s office, they still do not know the exact cause of the fire, and they’re working around the clock for answers as it remains under investigation.

If you’re interested in donating to help this family you can write a check to Love Inc, or send a donation to P.O. box 640 in Seaford, Delaware.
