Gulls fall in national championship to Middlebury

ASHLAND, VA- The Salisbury women’s lacrosse team fell short of their ultimate goal, dropping 14-9 in the 2019 National Championship game against Middlebury (VT.)

The Gulls got off to a rough start trailing 3-0 just under four minutes in, behind two free position goals from the Panthers. Salisbury would regain some traction, with Lydia McNulty and Courtney Fegan scoring back to back goals to narrow the deficit to one (3-2). After Salisbury’s 2-0 run, Middlebury would reel off 5 straight goals, before surrendering two more, to roll into halftime with a 8-4 lead.

After a Panther goal to start the second half, SU would net three straight goals (Alexis Strobel, Lydia McNulty, Emma Skoglund) to get within 9-7. But Middlebury would once again answer, netting five of the game’s final seven scores.

Salisbury finishes the season as national runner up, and number two in the coaches poll, with an overall record of 20-4.
