Colonel baseball completes undefeated season, hoists 1A state title trophy

ABERDEEN, Md.- After eight scoreless innings, the Colonel Richardson baseball team rattled off six runs in the top of the ninth to defeat McDonough 6-0 in the 1A MPSSAA State Championship game. The colonels finished their 2019 campaign 24-0.

It looked to be a defensive battle from the start as both teams were held without a run through seven innings to force extras. The two starting pitchers, Jameson Covey and Austin Simms, combined for twelve strikeouts and one walk through the first seven innings.

Another scoreless inning, the Rams made a pitching change to first baseman Sean Joseph to start the eighth. In the ninth, with the bases loaded, Joseph would walk two batters and Colonel would put the first two runs on the board. Next Colonel batter up and Jackie Zebron knocked a three RBI double into center to extend the lead to five. With Zebron on second, Ty Scott up to bat and he brought him around to score with a dribbler up the middle.

In the bottom of the ninth, just three outs to their second ever baseball state title, the defense would deliver. Two quick outs and a pop up caught by Chad Willoughby would seal it. The Colonels are your 2019 1A state champs!
