Students, alumni celebrate new Mardela gym that honors late coach

MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. – Students, faculty, and alumni at Mardela Middle and High school celebrated the reveal of the schools new gym and new championship banners. School officials say the gym got a brand new makeover with a brand new floor, new wall padding, and new championship banners.

And there’s also a special new addition. Written on the gymnasium floor are the words “McCool’s House of Hoops” to honor the legendary women’s basketball coach Barbara McCool who passed away back in 2009.

“I’m actually an alumni of Mardela myself, and when I came here as a principal the gym had not changed at all so we knew that we needed an update and of course we wanted to look for an opportunity to honor Coach McCool,” said principal Liza Hastings.

We’re told construction on the new gym began back in July.
