Experts offer tips on freezing pipes

47 ABC – In preparation for the first real winter weather this weekend, homeowners should be taking precautions to make sure that their pipes don’t freeze.

According to local plumbing experts one of the most important things you can do is go around your house and close the vents in your foundation.

Another big tip is to unhook any garden hoses that you still have connected. Now if your pipes do freeze, we’re told you should turn off your water pump and then call a professional to come in and thaw out your piping.

“You don’t want to try any home tricks, you don’t want to go under there with a hair dryer and try and do it yourself. You don’t want to do anything that is going to cause damage to your home,” explains Leif Hancock, President of Hancock and Sons Plumbing and Heating.

We’re told if you have any outdoor plumbing with a heat source to make sure it’s turned on and that your heating system is in good working order.
