Wico. Sheriff confirms active investigation into Humane Society Director, allegedly misused money
WICOMICO CO., Md. – Officials confirmed, on Friday, that there is an active investigation into the Director of the Humane Society of Wicomico County regarding the misappropriation of money.
Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis says Aaron Balsamo is an active target of an investigation that started “weeks ago”. More specifically, Lewis says investigators are looking at the alleged misuse of a credit card belonging to the Humane Society of Wicomico County, to the tune of “thousands of dollars”.
A forensic audit is being done to determine the exact amount of money that was misused, in regards to the private non-profit organization. Lewis adds that it could be weeks or even months until that audit is complete.
Meanwhile, Balsamo has not been charged and is cooperating with the investigation.
In August, officials confirmed that Balsamo was placed on administrative leave and Kevin Usilton was appointed as the Interim Director of the Wicomico County Humane Society.
Balsamo began the leadership role with the Wicomico County Humane Society in March 2016, according to his LinkedIn profile.
