Gang members among seven arrested in connection to drug investigation in Dover

Four gang members were among the seven people arrested, after police say they were taken into custody during a drug and firearm investigation, in Dover.

The Dover Police Department says on Wednesday, they along with the ATF Task Force and Delaware Probation and Parole arrested 7 people during a drug and firearm investigation. Police say they stopped a vehicle in the area of West North Street and Governors Avenue, where 22-year-old Jaymere Lewis was a passenger and fled on foot, leaving three other suspect in the vehicle. Authorities report that Lewis threw a loaded .32 caliber handgun which was later recovered by officers. The 22-year-old was apparently taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

Dover PD reports that 22-year-old Jaleel Wayman, 19-year-old Michael Taylor, and a 17-year-old Dover girl were left in the car and also taken into custody. Officers say a search warrant for an apartment at 74 Par Haven Drive was obtained as a result of the traffic stop.

According to the report, once inside the residence, law enforcement arrested 53-year-old Karriem Keys, 23-year-old Brentney Birkett, and 18-year-old Syncere Friends. Keys was reportedly found with 6.6 grams of marijuana. Both Birkett and Friends were found with a small amount of marijuana and a loaded .380 caliber handgun, which was later discovered to be reported stolen.

Among their charges, police say Lewis, Taylor, Friends and Birkett were charged with illegal gang participation.

The 17-year-old girl was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. She was released on criminal summons.

Lewis is charged with possession of firearm/ammo by person prohibited (2x), resisting arrest, carry concealed deadly weapon, possession of firearm during commission of felony, illegal gang participation, violation of probation. He was turned over to James T Vaughn Correctional Center on a $13,500 secured bond. 

Wayman was charged with resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with intent to deliver marijuana, violation of probation. He was turned over to James T Vaughn Correctional Center on bond.

Taylor was charged with resisting arrest, illegal gang participation, possession of firearm/ammo by person prohibited (2x), receiving stolen firearm, conspiracy second degree, possession of firearm during commission of felony, and possession of marijuana. The 19-year-old was committed to James T Vaughn Correctional Center on $13,500 secured bond. 

Keys was Charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was issued a $5,250 unsecured bond.

Friends was charged with illegal gang participation, possession of firearm/ammo by person prohibited (2x), receiving stolen firearm, conspiracy second degree, possession of firearm during commission of felony, and violation of probation. He was committed to James T Vaughn Correctional Center on $31,500 secured bond.

Birkett was charged with illegal fang participation, receiving stolen firearm, possession of firearm by person prohibited, possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, possession of firearm during commission of felony, resisting arrest, conspiracy second degree. She was turned over to the Baylor Women's Correction Center on $35,000 secured bond.
