Suspect wanted after reportedly firing at officers in Cambridge; both uninjured
Police say that a search is continuing for a suspect, who fired at Cambridge Police Department officers, on Monday night.
Troopers say that neither police officers or the suspect are believed to have been injured in the gunfire exchange.
The suspect is reportedly being described as a black man, believed to be wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and winter hat. He allegedly ran away and investigators have found no signs that he was injured.
Shortly after 11:30 PM on Monday night, two Cambridge Police officers were doing a crime reduction patrol in an area of the city where thefts from vehicles had been happening.
The officers were in uniform, but they were driving a vehicle not readily identified as a police vehicle. Investigators say that the officers were in the area of Race Street and Goldsborough Avenue, when they saw the suspect walking along the street. As they drove toward him, the man was reportedly seen reaching into his waistband.
Police say that before the officers could stop their vehicle, the suspect took out a large caliber handgun and fired what is believed to be one time at the officers. One of the Cambridge Police officers reportedly got out of the vehicle and fired what is believed to be one time at the suspect, who ran away. The officer followed the suspect, but no more shots were fired by either suspect or the officer.
Help was requested and additional Cambridge officers, as well as troopers from the Maryland State Police responded to help with a search. A Maryland State Police helicopter and K-9 team were also a part of the search effort. The suspect was not found.
The Cambridge Police Department helped the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigate the police involved shooting and investigators responded to do so. State Police Forensic Sciences Division crime scene technicians have searched and processed the scene for evidence. Investigators reportedly found a handgun and other items believed to have been thrown out by the suspect as he fled.
The search for the suspect is continuing on Tuesday, with help being provided by the Cambridge Police Department, the Maryland State Police, Dorchester County Sheriff's Office and allied police departments in the region.
