Piedmont Airlines hosts sixth annual Salisbury Dash Pull for United Way

understandably — it was being pulled by groups of 8 people — not for transportation, but for a good cause. it was the sixth year of the salisbury dash pull — hosted by piedmont airlines. 47 abc’s justina coronel was there for the competition and has more. track 1 this dash 8 aircraft weighs 28-thousand pounds — and these community members — are working together to pull it. the event today is what we call a dash pull and we have teams and employees who actually pull one of our aircraft, a dash aid aircraft, teams of 8 and have to pull i believe it’s 15 feet and they’re timed. track 2 it’s a fundraiser — put on by piedmont airlines — to benefit the united way. piedmont president and ceo lyle hogg says the idea came from a different airline — u-s air — which used to have people pull a jet — requiring 16 people. that’s where it started it kind of mirrored the us air procedure, they have now stopped this program but we hope to continue it. it’s just a lot of fun for our employees and a great team exercise for our employees as well. track 3 and while most of the pullers are employees — there are also teams from the community. each participant pays ten dollars — and the money goes directly to the united way. it’s a real morale booster with all the employees everybody gets involved, they have a dunking booth, they have food that they serve so its just a nice way to sort of give back to the employees and give to the community. track 4 it’s not the only way piedmont gives back — their employees also contribute to the united way through payroll deductions. assistant director amy luppens says all the money goes to 74 programs focusing on helping people with different needs and goals — such as financial stability. the real winner in this situation is united way and our community because teams are paying to pull and all of the proceeds benefit local programs. track 5 justina coronel 47 abc piedmont airlines hopes to raise more than 55-thousand dollars this year. next year they are hoping to go back to the original idea by pulling a jet plane. for the seventh straight year– the princeton review
