Reporter Ashonti Ford talks about how Victory Church is facing fines for allowing homeless to stay on the property

now — but there have been some challenges. last night the church attended dover’s city hall meeting with the homeless — to ask for help. 47 abc’s ashonti ford was there and has the latest. track victory church attended yet another city council meeting monday — in an effort to gain support from city council members for the homeless population in dover. enough enough really there comes a time when we have to put our hands down into the place where people need us to help and start actually helping. track last week–kent countyadministered victory church fines of one hundred dollars a day for every day they sheltered a homeless person in the church. the county stated that victory churchwas acting as a commercial property and to house homeless people in their facility they needed to abide by zoning regulations or pay $100 a day. it was 62 degrees today and it’s millions and millions of homeless people and i don’t think when you guys go home at night you turn your heat off and use a blanket and lay on the floor track that’s alexis simms she’s blind, pregnant and has lupis. alexis was also homeless – until victory church bought a camper for her and her mother to live in behind the church. she’s wants victory to continue to help others just like her. the church has since — hired a civil rights lawyer— who reached out to kent county about the fines. the county granted the church more time to abide by the zoning regulations but have not dropped the fines. i’m sure you’ve seen the deaths of a couple homeless people from being outside .. and not having a stable place to stay and i know you guys – like she said can go home to your nice house – shower to take – i went years without taking a shower :35 days and weeks – and thats not healthy track while the county issues are on hold – monday’s effort was with the city council – who stated that the growing homeless population is something they are very well aware of. in fact as of now the only resource for the homeless is code purple also known as 211. this organization helps the homeless find shelter when winter conditions become too dangerous for people to stay outside. outside of that – the city of dover has no funding for the homeless population. they’re doing the work of the kingdom that many many churches in your area are not doing track appling tells us that they will be attending these city meetings every month and not for money — but for the opportunity to help the homeless without being weighed down by city and county regulations . ashonti ford 47abc we will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as they develop. and to recap this ongoing battle with victory church and the city of dover….. head to our website – just logon to 47 abc-dot-com. state police in delaware are looking for a
