LONG NECK, Del. – Watchnight Service – Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 11 pm. At Long Neck United Methodist Church, 27051 Long Neck Road, Long Neck, Delaware with a lite meal at 10 pm, which will include Black Eye Peas. This is a late-night church service, which is held late on New Year’s Eve, and ends after midnight. This provides the opportunity for Christians to review the year that has passed and make confession and prepare for the year ahead by praying and resolving. This service follows the lead of a small Christian denomination called the Moravians in what is now the Czech Republic that began having “watch” services in 1733, the founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley, originated watch night services in 1740, sometimes calling them Covenant Renewal Services. Today, a Methodist watchnight service includes singing, spontaneous prayers and testimonials, as well as scripture readings. OCEAN CITY, Md. – The festivities begin on Thursday, with a New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show at Northside Park to celebrate the beginning of 2016 and the 23rd Annual Winterfest of Lights. The fireworks display, which will begin promptly at midnight, will be accompanied by live entertainment, warm hot chocolate, and the opportunity to ride the Winterfest of Lights. Hours for the Winterfest of Lights will be extended until just before midnight, allowing visitors to travel through the winter paradise of lights and then listen to music by “DJ Kutt” as they wait for the countdown to midnight.
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Marshall P. Muskrat will make his annual DIVE this year on Somerset Avenue. The event is FREE to the public, and runs from 9:00 PM until 12:00 AM! Entertainment provided by DJ “Mr. T”. There will be drinks and food available for purchase. Shops will also be open. In addition to all of the fun at the dive, the Princess Anne Vol. Fire Company will be holding a dance. Tickets for the dance are $15 for a couple or $10 for an individual. You may buy your tickets at Somerset Hidden Treasures or at the door.
SALISBURY, Md. – Downtown Salisbury is once again hosting their own ball drop. The event will take place outside of Headquarters Live. Bigger, brighter, sparklier, and LOUDER, NYESBY is back for 2016! This year’s family friendly event is centered around Salisbury’s premiere music venue, Headquarters Live, where perennial favorites Bonedaddys will rock the NYE stage! ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Md. – Join Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT) at 1:00 p.m. on January 1st at Assateague Island State Park as we honor ACT’s founders with the 36th Annual Ilia Fehrer/Judy Johnson New Year’s Day Beach Walk. This year’s walk will again be led by former National Park Service Ranger Chris Seymour. In keeping with the anniversary spirit, the theme for the walk this year will be “Happy Birthday” as Chris will talk about the life spans of Assateague animals and plants we normally encounter on the walk and mix in Assateague’s age clues we find all the time on the beach. At the end of the walk, you can contemplate what you’ve discovered while you sip hot chocolate and munch on cookies provided free to all participants. DEWEY BEACH, Del. – At noon on January 1, take a plunge in the chilly Atlantic Ocean at the Dewey Dunk on Dagsworthy Avenue Beach. Afterward, warm up in front of the New Year’s Day Beach Bonfire. This is an all ages event. The Dewey Dunk is $25 per person and includes a commemorative Dewey Dunk T-shirt, wristband for New Year’s Day discounts at local businesses and a pre-dunk bonfire and party.
