Championing the cause of living with prosthetics

It was a meeting months in the making Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Ocean City native Nathan Simm, who lives with a prosthetic leg, finally had the chance to meet Caitlin Adams who has raised thousands of dollars to help people living with prosthetic limbs.

As for Adams, it was a chance to meet someone else helping that cause as well as a final pitstop on her way to Ocean City.

“It’s almost over, but it’s been great.” Said Adams when asked about the status of her charity “Run Across Maryland“.

Money raised by her run will be donated to Limbs For Life, which provides prosthetic limbs for those in need who cannot afford them on their own.

Just before the Shorebirds took on the Hagerstown Suns game, Nathan, with Caitlin by his side had the honor of throwing out the first pitch.

Nathan’s mom, Shannon Simm, told 47 ABC that it was an effort coordinated after representatives with the Salisbury Jaycees saw our story in April highlighting Nathan’s journey with his prosthetic leg.

“After that aired someone contacted us from the Salisbury Jaycees to tell me about Caitlin and I think it was immediately, we contacted each other.”

Caitlin’s “Run Across Maryland” campaign has raised over $21,000.

An inspiration that all started with just one word.

“When I was a junior in high school the word prosthetics out of nowhere popped into my head.” And “I realized that there is people out there that do deal with that every single day who can’t afford prosthetics, so they can’t even get up and walk.” said Adams.

Walking for those with prosthetic limbs may be difficult, but with the generosity of Caitlin and the persistence of Nathan, those without limbs have a winning team to cheer on.
