Lady Hornets Fall 80-62 at Home to Coppin State

Delaware State women’s basketball team fell on Monday night, to the visiting Coppin State Eagles. DSU trailed by just one at the half, but was outscored 41-24 in the second on the way to an 80-62 loss.

The loss is the Hornets third in a row, after winning their previous two. Delaware State’s Tierra Hawkins led all scorers with 14 points at the break as DSU shot 56% (14-25) in the first half, while Coppin shot 39.5% (17-43), still it would be the Eagles taking a 39-38 lead into the locker room.

After halftime, the two squads would be tied at 51 before CSU’s Bria Harris put the Eagles up one with a free throw with 12:31. That would be as close as DSU would get as Coppin would go on a 13-1 run to take a 12 point lead with 9:06 to play.

Genesis Lucas led CSU with a game-high 22 points, shooting 10-17 from the field. Hawkins finished with 15 points to lead the Delaware State. DSU has not beaten Coppin since February 21, 2011.

The Hornets look to bounce back when they travel to take on Hampton on Saturday, February 21st.
