Hey there, Delmarva!
I’m Leila Weah and I’m a Reporter at WMDT.
Originally from Minnesota, I decided to follow my passion for journalism and it led me here to Salisbury, Maryland. Growing up in the mid-west, I’m used to the slow-paced, ‘Minnesota nice’, lifestyle and after moving to the East coast, I was prepared to shift to a more fast-paced way of living. Surprisingly, the Eastern Shore reminds me a lot of Minnesota, so I’ve found comfort in somewhat feeling like I’m back home.
I found my love for journalism at the beginning of my college career, at the University of St. Thomas. During my first year, I joined my university’s student-run news organization, TommieMedia, as a reporter, and later gained experience through positions like studio producer and Top Stories anchor. From there, I went on to pursue other jobs in the industry, such as interning at FOX 9 in Minneapolis, and hosting a podcast, where I highlighted Minnesota-based talent. Fun fact: I won an Upper Mid-West student Emmy award for a story I did on the Derek Chauvin trial.
As a journalist, I’m extremely passionate about uplifting the voices that need it most. I enjoy telling stories that bring awareness to pressing issues, and I believe in shining a light on underrepresented communities to give them the exposer they need to tell their stories.
In my free time, I enjoy swimming, going on walks, cooking, watching Breaking Bad, (I’ve watched the whole series four times now,) and of course, writing.
I love meeting new people, so if you see me, say hi! If you have an interesting story idea, send it my way via email: Leila_weah@wmdt.com.
