Woodbridge Claims First Ever Football State Title With Win Over Wilm. Friends

Woodbridge made their goal very clear when they started the season. Win the South. Go undefeated. And win the programs first ever state championship.

The Blue Raiders lived up to their incredible standards Saturday after they defeated Wilmington Friends 14-9 in the DIAA DII State Title. The championship capped off a perfect 12-0 season for Woodbridge.

The game proved to be a defensive battle as neither teams offenses were able to get much going early. Finally, Woodbridge was able to flip the field after quarterback Troy Haynes throw a play action pass down the middle to Gabe Wescott for a 66 yard game down to the Quakers 5 yard line. The Blue Raiders would finish off the drive with a short touchdown run by Terrique Riddick. The defense would do their job the rest of the half as Woodbridge would take a 6-0 lead into the locker room. It looked like Woodbridge was going to double their lead after the Quakers muffed a punt on their own 15 yard line. Woodbridge would go to the air on 3rd down, but the pass would be picked off and taken 87 yards the other way for the pick-6. The point after was no good as the game would be tied 6-6. The Blue Raiders then found a way to answer as they marched down the field before a Haynes would reverse field and take a run in from 21 yards out. Richard Massey would punch in the 2 point conversion as Woodbridge would take a 14-6 lead. But Wilmington Friends wasn’t ready to go away just yet. They would drive down to the Blue Raiders 5 yard line before they would settle for a field goal to climb within 5. The Blue Raiders would fumble the ensuing possession giving the Quakers a chance with under 5 minutes to play. Facing 4th and goal, they would throw to the endzone before James Kane made a great diving pass breakup. Jamon Kane would be able to run for a couple first downs as Woodbridge ran out the clock for the win.
