Forum held in Cambridge to discuss keeping students safe in schools

"I think the fire has been burning for sometime and I think that just threw gasoline on it," said forum organizer Gregory Robbins.

More than 100 parents and faculty combined attended the public forum held in Cambridge Monday night to discuss different options  in order to keep children safe in schools.

"They're our most precious gift that's given to us and we owe it to them and the school and the staff, the staff needs a safe work environment," said Robbins.

Event Organizers say they'll present a list of ideas on how to keep students safe gathered at the forum to the board of education Tuesday. On the top of the list is putting more of a police presence in schools.

"This isn't an issue that happened just on Thursday the school safety has been going on for a long time. As I spoke earlier columbine was in 1999 and here we are 19 years later and we're still not in a secure school like we should be," said Robbins.

However not all parents believe adding officers is the right approach.

"I don't think it would be favorable to have more police presence in the school," said concerned parent Charlene Jones.

But there is one thing everyone can agree on and that's keeping the children safe and uniting as one community.

"I think its great that parents are here now they're voicing their concerns trying to figure out how to come together and work as a community because I believe it is a community issue," said Jones.

Organizers will present their ideas to the board of education Tuesday night at 6:30 at Choptank Elementary School. And they tell us they will continue to update the community on the committees progress.
