UMES Women’s Basketball Squad Helps Former Hawk Stewart Pursue Dream of Guatemala

Princess Anne, MD – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team showed the true foundation of the program is its commitment to teammates as they have reached out to help former player Shanyce Stewart. Stewart graduated after playing four years as a Hawk last Spring and is now embracing on her next big adventure, an internship that will take her to Guatemala where she will work with local doctors helping improve the healthcare quality available.

The trip is expected to cost around $1,500 dollars and was out of the price range available for Stewart. Upon hearing this, this years current Hawks team decided to take it upon themselves to help raise the funds for her by selling baked goods at games as well as promote her “fund me” website.

Stewart explained the big drive of the trip was the opportunity to change peoples lives for the better, and in some cases save lives all together. She said the chance to go there is a dream and can't put into words how appreciative she is of anyone that helps that dream become a reality.

Her teammates and former coaches described her as one of the hardest working players they have ever known. She was mature beyond her years and was always a calming influence on the rest of the team. Every player I spoke with said that if anyone where to deserve this opportunity, it would be Stewart.
