Indian River School District approves new health curriculum

After months of debate, the Indian River School district has approved a new health education curriculum called Health Smart.

The curriculum outlines HIV, STD’s, and pregnancy. The books also defines what it means to be gay, lesbian, transgender, or questioning.

One school board member thought those topics were inappropriate for the classroom, 47ABC actually spoke with him back in October.

However, Monday night the school board finally came to a unanimous vote in favor of Health Smart

Dr. Louann Hudson, the Indian River School District Director of Curriculum and Construction says, “We have had a sex education curriculum covering these topics for many years. The difference is we didn’t have a common sense of materials and a common built in sequence in every classroom. I think what this gives us is a very unified approach to the topics that have been covered in our district’s classrooms for many years.”

Health Smart will be used in all of the Indian River School District’s high school health classes.
