Decatur Girls Bring Bayside Title Back To Berlin
It wasn’t pretty, but the job was done. The Stephen Decatur Seahawks girls basketball team shook off poor shooting and multiple turnovers, to take their first Bayside title crown since 1977, beating Queen Anne’s 51-36.
Payton Van Kirk got Decatur off to a great start, scoring the game’s first 6 points, and recording 8 in the first eight minutes. Decatur led 12-7 after one quarter, and 28-19 at the half, thanks to a great effort by junior guard Dayona Godwin. Godwin, after being shut out in the first frame, scored the first four points of the second, and 10 total points in the quarter.
Both teams came out sluggish in the third, combining for just 16 points, yet for Queen Anne’s, the game would still be in reach. With Decatur holding to a 36-27 lead, Kallie German would hit a 3, making it a 6 point game with 7 minutes to go. That is as close as they would get, with Decatur going on an 11-2 run to put the game away.
Godwin would lead all scorers with 21 points, with teammate Payton Van Kirk finishing with 12. For Queen Anne’s, Kallie German led her team with 15 points, with Ta’Kia Dozier pitching in 10.
