Ocean City native to become Navy Information Warfare Officer

OCEAN CITY, Md. – An Ocean City native is about to graduate from one phase of navy boot camp with the hope of becoming an Information Warfare Officer.

Maura Smith is a 2012 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School and a 2016 graduate of the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Smith enlisted in the navy just ten weeks ago, and started officer candidate school. Soon, she’ll graduate from that phase and move on to Virginia Beach in November for the next phase of training.

She says for anyone wanting to join the Navy, she does have some advice.

“Think about it, make sure you really want it, it’s hard, and we do have some people who quit the program, it’s not a lot, it’s very few, but just being ready physically,” she said.

As a positive, Smith says one of her best moments in boot camp thus far was receiving a care package from her family with some Maryland goodies — including salt water taffy.
