Mar. 31 – UMES 5k Strides For Epilepsy

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Pharmacy’s Student Government Association is proud to announce the 3rd Annual 5k Strides for Epilepsy run or walk. Our reason for having this event is to get the community involved in our mission of advancing epilepsy research while also encouraging healthy activity.

In 2014, over 140 participants, 16 sponsors, and over 50 volunteers supported our race to help raise over $3,000. Please see more on last year’s event by clicking on “2014 5K Strides for Epilepsy”.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that is characterized by a person having 2 or more seizures which would require treatment. According to the Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE), epilepsy affects 65 million people worldwide and the prevalence totals more than Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, and Parkinson’s Disease combined. Since the mortality rate of those with epilepsy is 2-3 times higher and the risk of sudden death is 24 times greater than the average person, our organization has concluded that this is a condition that requires further attention.

Epilepsy is a real concern so please help support this charity event as we raise awareness for the disease as many remain unaware of how many people are suffering.
