Crash sparks fire at daycare center

A two-vehicle crash near Camden clipped a pole, knocking out traffic lights and sparked a fire in a local childcare facility.

State troopers say around 11:21 a.m. Saturday a 16-year-old Camden-Wyoming male struck the rear of a driver traveling on South Dupont Highway. After the impact, he swerved off the east side shoulder of US13 and struck a utility pole which caused it to snap in half before coming to a stop.

While the Camden-Wyoming Fire Company was on-scene for the crash, crews apparently heard a fire alarm coming from The Children’s Place childcare center on South DuPont Highway.

According to reports, smoke was observed coming from a classroom and a small fire was extinguished quickly.  We’re told the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the incident, but preliminary details indicate a power surge from the broken utility pole might have sparked the fire.

Both treated and released from Kent General Hospital.

The 16-year-old driver was cited for Inattentive Driving and Failure to Have Insurance in Possession.
