Decatur Girls Lax Claims Bayside Crown, Stays Perfect

The Stephen Decatur girls lacrosse team kept their incredible undefeated season going with a 9-7 come from behind win over Queen Anne’s in the Bayside Championship game. The win improves the Seahawks to 13-0.
The Lions would strike first out out of the gate, and quickly build up a 3-0 lead before the Seahawks finally would get on track. Lexi VanKirk would then find the back of the net with a couple minutes left in the first half to give Decatur the lead. Then with under a minute to play, Queen Anne’s would turn over the ball, leading to a run out the other way and a score to give Decatur a 5-3 lead at halftime. Payton VanKirk would then score an unassisted goal to open the second half to push the lead to 6-3. The Lions would then be the team to respond. Kallei German would score to get the Lions back within 2 with 16 minutes to go. VanKirk would then have an answer for Decatur, but the Lions would come back quickly. German would score again to make it a 2 goal game, followed by a goal from Hanna Scott and another from German to tie the game at 7-7 with 8 minutes to go. The Decatur’s experience would show. Jillian Petitio would come up with a huge save to start a break, and Ally Beck would turn on the jets and run by everyone, circle back, then run by the defense again and go in for the go-ahead score. Shortly after that, Bridgette Ardis would find Blair Yesko off a free position for the insurance and final goal of the game.
Decatur returns to action Friday when they host Bennett in the second round of the state tournament, while Queen Anne’s will host the winner of Cambridge SD and North Caroline.
