Pedestrian killed during crash in Georgetown

A Dover woman has died, after reportedly being hit by a truck while crossing a roadway.

Delaware State Police say on Monday morning, around 4:30 AM, Troopers responded to the area of Route 113, just north of Bramhall Street, for reports of a pedestrian crash. They reportedly found that 44-year-old Jennifer Hughes was walking across the highway from the center median, when she apparently walked into the path of a 2007 GMC Sierra truck, driven by a Georgetown man.

Police say Hughes was hit in the left lane, and landed in the right. She was reportedly not crossing in a crosswalk, and was not carrying a flashlight. Hughes was reportedly rushed from the scene by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the pick-up was reportedly wearing a seat belt, and was uninjured in the crash.

DSP say the Georgetown Police Department asked the DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit to assume the investigation. They say alcohol and speed do not appear factors in the crash, and no charges are expected to be filed. Officials say Route 113 northbound was closed between Bramhall Street and Bridgeville Road, for around two and a half hours, while the crash was investigated and cleared.

“Troopers remind pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.”
